The Sociedade dos Engenhos da Calheta was created during a period of great industrial development, in the second sugar cycle, at the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century. It is one of the oldest sugarcane mills in Madeira, continuing to work with ancient machinery, producing high quality rum, obtained by controlled fermentation and careful distillation, as well as sugarcane honey.
Thanks to its genuineness, the rum produced by Engenho da Calheta is the raw material for making the famous poncha and various cocktails.
This space allows guided tours from Tuesday to Saturday. It is possible to visit a small museum center that shows the various stages of the working process, as well as taste and purchase rum, poncha and honey cake.
