On the north coast of Madeira, in the village of Porto da Cruz, are the Engenhos do Norte, one of the three old mills still in operation in Madeira. Built in 1927, as a result of the merger of some of the approximately fifty existing ones on the island, it continues to produce agricultural Rum from Madeira using the machines of that time, being the only one in Europe to use steam as a driving force. The brands “Branca”, “Larano” and “970” are the oldest in Engenhos do Norte. “White” and “970” are the most awarded. The “Rum 970”, popular among Madeirans since 1970, celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2020. Since 2015, Engenhos do Norte has won 27 medals in international competitions.
